What to see in the Alcazaba of Malaga
The Alcazaba of Malaga is one of the best-preserved Muslim fortresses in Spain and a symbol of the city’s Andalusian past. Built in the 11th century by the Hammudi dynasty, its structure reflects the fusion of defensive elements with the refinement of a royal palace. During our guided tour, we will explore its most emblematic features, discovering the secrets hidden within its stone walls and gardens with fountains.
Below, we tell you what to see in the Alcazaba and what makes each of these corners special:
Vault door and column door
Our tour begins at the Puerta de la Bóveda, the main entrance to the Alcazaba, where you will discover how this fortress was protected by a system of zigzag entrances designed to slow down attackers.
Immediately afterwards, we will pass through the Gate of the Columns, so named because its arches were built using recycled material from the nearby Roman Theater. This detail highlights the influence of Roman architecture on the construction of the Alcazaba.
Plaza de Armas: the heart of the fortress
One of the most important areas of the Alcazaba is the Plaza de Armas, originally used as a training and defense area for soldiers.
Today, this spacious open courtyard offers one of the first panoramic views of Malaga, with the port, the cathedral, and the old town as a backdrop.
At this point, our guide will explain the military tactics used by the Muslims to defend the fortress and how the Alcazaba withstood multiple attacks throughout history.
Taifa Palace and Nasrid Palace: Governors' Residence
Inside the Alcazaba, we will discover its most sumptuous part: the Taifa and Nasrid Palaces, former residences of the Muslim governors.
These palaces stand out for their refined Andalusian architecture, with Nasrid-inspired courtyards, horseshoe arches, and beautiful decorative tiles.
- Taifa Palace: Built during the Taifa kingdom’s heyday, its structure is reminiscent of the palaces of the Alhambra in Granada.
- Nazarí Palace: Expanded in the 14th century with influences from the Nazarí dynasty of Granada, it features porticoes and courtyards with fountains.
In this part of the tour, you will travel back in time to imagine what life was like in the Alcazaba during its golden age, when Malaga was one of the most important cities in Al-Andalus.
Tower of Homage
One of the most impressive structures in the Alcazaba is the keep, currently closed to visitors, located at Tower of Homage.
From here, the rulers controlled the entire city and the Mediterranean Sea, protecting Malaga from possible maritime attacks.
Panoramic viewpoints: the best view of Malaga
Along the Alcazaba, there are several panoramic viewpoints from which to admire the Malaga skyline.
- Wall viewpoint: Perfect for photos, with views of the Roman Theater and the historic center.
- Parade ground viewpoint: From here you can see Gibralfaro Castle, which together with the Alcazaba formed a defensive complex unique in Europe.
These viewpoints are the ideal place to enjoy the sunset in Malaga, with the sun setting over the sea and the city illuminated in golden tones.
